It’s tough out there, isn’t it? Even we real estate professionals can get caught up in a version of this terrible comparison cycle – I need to update the blog (I did); I need to get a new profile pic (working on that); I need to have newer, shinier signs (just did that last year)… It can drive you bananas.
When it comes to real estate, however, it’s not just a question of fruit, but of equity and investment. There are certain things you can do to protect the value of your real estate that have nothing to do with the Joneses. For instance:
– take good care of the exterior of your home. You don’t need fancy landscaping and expensive stonework. Keep your yard trimmed and free of debris, make sure walkways are clear and neatly patched, if needed, remove or repair fading trim work or unnecessary decor, if you’re going to invest – invest in lighting. Neutral, simple fixtures to keep paths and doorways well lit are always appreciated.
– less is more. You shouldn’t overdo the fancy flooring, multi-color paint scheme and custom-everything, unless it’s just for your enjoyment. If you love it – go to town! But for re-sale purposes, know that in most instances buyers enjoy clean, neutral, simple decor, especially when it comes to expensive things like floors and tiles.
– if your neighbor gets a great new red fence – great! You don’t need to get one, too. Adding elements to your home’s interior or exterior design should occur only when you need or want them. Sometimes, in the pursuit of uniformity you can damage the unique qualities that make your home special. Proceed with caution.
If you keep up with your own place and enjoy it because it’s what suits you, you won’t have to worry as much about what the Joneses are up to.
